This summer, explore the Cultural Landscape of Greece! Students will be introduced to the multi-faceted nature of this intriguing country. Although ancient Greece was the birthplace of our western civilization, Greece today is a modern, emerging European nation and the site of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games. In this course, led by Mary Snell and Irwin Novak, students will spend three days in the bustling capital of Athens, but spend most of their time on the quieter island of Lesvos. Here they will live in the city of Mytilene, an official Sister City with Portland, Maine. Daily they will share meals in their pensione, or in seaside or city cafés; and take field trips all over the island to ancient sites, villages, archeological and art museums, and beaches. In class they will learn about the physical and societal framework of the culture through lectures on human geography, geology, cultural traditions, the impact of tourism, environmental issues, and regional politics - all given by faculty from USM, with additional lectures by University of Aegean faculty and other professionals. In this writing intensive class, students will be expected to complete daily assignments, keep daily journals and make other visual records of their experiences. There will be two exams and a final project. Beyond the academic credit earned and knowledge learned, students will take away lasting memories and friendships, forged in the dazzling light and warm of the people they will meet.
